SANDBLASTED

The sandblasted sign is a fairly recent development and a bit less costly
than a carved and g
ilded sign, and sometimes more effective. A computer
guided mask is cut and adhered to the substrate. Any areas not protected
by the mask are eroded
by high pressure sand,
resulting in the masked
areas appearing to be raised above the surface. I prefer a painted letter.
It looks very smart by itself or, in combination with gold leafed carving.

The sandblasted sign above is an 8' x 2' Signfoam substrate, with a blast depth of 3/8". The abraded surface resembles a finely stippled concrete finish. "bw" is incise carved and inlaid with 23k gold leaf.

historic carved sign

Sandblasted signs made from redwood or cedar will expose the grain, for a rustic look.
Redwood or cedar is chosen for hard use areas or when structural considerations dictate.
Below, Signfoam was used where foot traffic could not reach the sign.
When properly sealed and coated, Signfoam WILL NOT warp, split or pop or crack!

A touch of carving or fanciful sculptures can be added
as well as applied vinyl for smaller subtext
.
