The " QUARTERBOARD " shown above is an old maritime term for
a decidedly horizontal layout, aptly named because of its use of quartersawn stock,
running horizontally, which aids in the carving of straight vertical stems of letters.


	Hand carved work is done with specially shaped gouges and knives. Sanding,smoothing and sealing are critical when gold leaf is the crowning touch.
