Good sculptural carvings are exciting to look at and difficult to achieve.
They begin with a pencil sketch, followed by a full size or scaled clay modeling
before the gouges are even picked up. Above, center, the 16" anchor and roping
was carved from Honduran mahogany and overlaid with 22k silver leaf.

The beehive was sculpted from signfoam as was the horse head on the right. Signfoam is relatively
easy to carve and holds up excellently when properly coated. In between is a chestnut carving.

Above, center is the Millenium Door, a good example of a project involving significant design time,
planning, and coordination of specialties, like hand forged door pulls, sandblasted side panels,
and of course, the sculpted and gilded elements shown on either side.

IN SITU CARVING

In the main courtroom of the Dauphin County Courthose are the carved and gold leafed names
and dates of every sitting judge since 1797. The characters are only 1 1/4" in height.
The sculpted mahogany motifs of historic lawgivers, going back to Moses and Hammurabi,
by the original carver in 1938 are something to see ! Since 1993, I've carved eleven new names
and rectified three others executed between the original set and mine.
